In the 2019 season, approximately 200 resorts belonging to Italy’s beach owners’ union (Sindacato Italiano Balneari) worked together on the Sea Sentinels project, making researchers available and involving customers in the collection of data on the marine environment and on biodiversity. More than 3,000 bathers thus became “scientists for a day”, helping to survey the species that live in our seas and the changes that have occurred in underwater environments.
Sea Sentinels is a Citizen Science project, in which the citizens - in this case, bathers, snorkellers and divers – undertake for a day to collect data on the environment and biodiversity, through recreational activities that enable them to help protect the seas while enjoying themselves.
Italian beach resorts have got involved with this with increasing success since 2018, thanks to a partnership with Confcommercio and Confturismo.
SUN will provide all the information you need to join the project and offer users forms of entertainment that comply with new environmental ethical standards.
